...began with a simple but powerful idea: what if chef-quality meals were accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstance?
Founded by Justin Thomas — affectionately known as the Mad Hatter — the organization grew from grassroots meal efforts into a community-driven nonprofit focused on dignity-first food support.
What started in borrowed kitchens with a handful of volunteers has grown into a movement fueled by compassion, creativity, and community care.
And we’re just getting started.

At Once Upon a Thyme RVA, our mission is simple:
To reduce food insecurity in Richmond by providing thoughtfully prepared, high-quality meals to community members in need.
We bridge the gap between food access and food quality by ensuring that every meal we distribute is made with intention, respect, and culinary excellence.
Chef-Quality Meal Production
We prepare fresh, ready-to-eat meals designed to nourish both body and spirit.
Our menus are thoughtfully planned to maximize nutrition, flavor, and comfort.
Community Partnerships
We work hand-in-hand with organizations such as:
• Community fridge programs
• Ronald McDonald House
• Local mutual aid networks
• Food recovery partners
Together, we make sure good food reaches the people who need it most.
No kitchen experience? No problem. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our work. We provide guidance, training, and a welcoming environment for anyone ready to give back.
Food insecurity isn’t just about hunger — it’s about access, dignity, and equity.
Many food assistance programs focus on shelf-stable items. While important, families also deserve fresh, thoughtfully prepared meals that feel comforting and familiar.
Once Upon a Thyme RVA fills that gap by:
Reducing food waste through smart sourcing
Creating nutritious prepared meals
Supporting families during vulnerable moments
Strengthening Richmond’s mutual aid ecosystem
